THE PRINCE AND THE DEMONS

Rama, Prince of Ayodhya, won the hand of the beautiful Sita, but through the plotting of his stepmother, Queen Kaikeyi was exiled with his wife for 14 years.
In the forest Rama was tricked by the demon Ravan and his sister Suprankha, and Sita was captured.
Rama be-friended the monkey king Hanuman who searched the world looking for Sita. Once she had been found Rama and his army attacked Ravans place on the island of Lanka. Rama killed Ravan and rescued Sita.
After the couples triumphant return to Ayodhya, Rama was crowned true King and began a golden age for all mankind.

WHERE IS IT FROM?

Pursglove Performing Arts have taken their production from a television transcript of "The Prince and the Demons" produced for Thames Television series "Theatre Box" it was broadcast in 1981.

ROOTS IN RELIGION

"The Prince and the Demons" is a classic Indian folktale from the time of the Ramayana (way of Rama). Hindus believe that Rama is the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu, their God. Rama and his wife Sita are believed by many Hindus to be the perfect married couple. It is them who are the main characters in this play.
Hinduism is the name given to a family of religions and cultures which began in India and still have very strong roots today.
Hindus believe that religion is a key part of life and that whatever they do their religion is with them always. All they do is based on their religion from their family life right through to what they eat.
There are 750 million Hindus in the world, in the UK alone the are 400,000 of these about 160,000 practice their religion. Most Hindus however still live in the home country of the religion, India.
Although there are many different branches of Hinduism each of which has different beliefs and practices they have many things in common. The things most common is a belief in a single divinity or a supreme god present in everything they do believe also that there are other Gods who are aspects or parts of that supreme God. They also believe in `Karma` a process in which the soul goes to an afterlife where it is reborn. The next life is determined by how well one behaved in the last.
Most Hindus worship from home and will have a shrine there. Hindu temples are the main focus of religious life but they don't have a tradition of congregational (gathered) worship.

It is seen as a holy act to recite the Ramayana and scenes such as one we are performing are still dramatised throughout the world.
